Overview

With wild-looking bodywork and dramatic performance, the 2022 Lamborghini Aventador is spectacular in every sense of the word. It's also the last of a dying breed, with hybrid technology expected to enhance future iterations of the V-12 supercar. Still, this wedge-shaped, scissor-doored Lambo blasts into the sunset with neck-snapping acceleration and a maniacal exhaust note. Hardtop versions avoid the cumbersome removable roof but lack the flamboyance of the topless roadsters. Those seeking maximum performance and prestige will want the feistier SVJ model. Sure, the 2020 Aventador is old by supercar standards and it's the opposite of practical, but we challenge anyone to find a Lamborghini that's more visceral.

What's New for 2022?

As the Aventador approaches the end of its lifecycle, which launched way back in 2011, Lamborghini looks to say arrivederci with a convertible version of the SVJ variant for 2020. The roofless one was introduced at the 2019 Geneva auto show. Although the SVJ roadster has the same 759-hp V-12 and 217-mph top speed as the coupe, it costs about $50,000 more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2020 Aventador powertrain hierarchy begins with a mid-mounted naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 that develops 730 horsepower and 509 lb-ft of torque that is transmitted to the wheels via a seven-speed automated-manual transmission. This basic setup is shared among the three distinct variants, but the track-focused SVJ (which stands for Superveloce Jota) has various enhancements that unlock extra horsepower and torque that meet the pavement through all four wheels. We drove this brutally powerful monster—along with its roofless counterpart—and experienced their tremendous acceleration and kidney-crushing cornering forces firsthand. The hefty machines heaved through the corners, but their incredible grip and rear-steering system helped it change direction. We have previously driven the Aventador S and the Aventador S roadster, with the latter's top-down ability providing the best method to overhear the V-12's thrilling timbre.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

With fuel-economy ratings in the single digits, the Aventador ranks among the least efficient cars on the market. The EPA expects all models to earn 9 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway. While we haven't had the opportunity to test the government's estimates on our 200-mile route, we're confident its real-world mpg will vary.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

In typical Lamborghini fashion, every Aventador supports a set of scissor doors that swing open upward. The low-slung interior is showing its age versus contemporary supercar rivals, but it can be fitted with a variety of premium materials and personalized options. Still, the cabin will not hold many small items, and luggage space is limited. The dashboard features a digital gauge cluster that changes its layout with the drive modes—Strada, Sport, and Corsa; Ego mode allows you to personalize the settings for powertrain, steering, and suspension.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Unfortunately, the Aventador's standard infotainment system is behind the times, with dated graphics and awkward integration. In addition to voice commands and Apple CarPlay capability, the company offers a performance data recorder that saves lap times and track data. An upgraded audio system that adds door-mounted subwoofers and tweeters on the dashboard is also on the roster.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Aventador hasn't been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Lamborghini also skips the driver-assistance technology that encumber less extraordinary cars.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Compared with most mainstream automakers, Lamborghini's powertrain warranty doesn't look all that impressive. However, its protection plans are competitive with high-end rivals such as Ferrari and can be enhanced by optional maintenance packages.

(1) Limited warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles

(2) Powertrain warranty covers 3 years or unlimited miles

(3) No complimentary scheduled maintenance.
